| The Pirate Bay, one of the Web's original torrent sites, has released their very own Web browser. Intended to evade the censorship restrictions enforced by many governments, PirateBrowser is actually an integrated blend of the portable edition of Mozilla Firefox, the FoxyProxy add-on, along with the popular Tor client Vidalia. For those unfamiliar with Tor, it is essentially an open source software routing system designed to provide anonymous communication on the Internet. Although Tor is utilized, PirateBrowser does not enable anonymous Web surfing. What it does is offer a way around the widespread blocking of certain websites by many countries. In the true spirit of Internet freedom, The Pirate Bay's browser offering lets you circumvent these bureaucracy-driven blackouts without having to configure proxies or have any advanced knowledge of such. There are limitations here, and PirateBrowser is certainly not the be-all, end-all of censorship on the Web. What it can be, however, is a quick and easy solution for residents of countries such as the UK and Ireland that have found themselves blocked from their favorite sites due to government orders. While it doesn't do the trick in all cases, it may be worth your time to take it for a virtual spin. As with anything of this nature, though, use it at your own risk. | |
